Secondary Hosts 220 Delegates for AISMUN IX 2018/07/19 Updated

On 25 to 27 May, AISHK hosted the ninth annual Australian International School Model United Nations conference - AISMUN IX. Students and Chairs from AISHK in Years 7 to 12 attended the conference on the weekend for sessions of vigorous debate and days of meeting new people.

AISMUN is an annual conference catering for students in Years 7 to 12, opening delegates up to a conference experience which seeks to nurture and guide younger students in mastering the basics of Model United Nations, as well as allowing delegates to improve their public speaking skills, debate and form new friendships. This year at AISMUN IX, the theme of the conference was ‘between the lines,’ a theme which encourages delegates to look beyond what we see in our everyday life and acknowledge what we can do better.

At this year’s AISMUN conference, students were honoured to welcome Mr Ken Gordon, Deputy Consul General for Australia in Hong Kong and Macau, to our opening ceremony as our keynote speaker. The conference included six unique committees, consisting of the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council, the Security Council, the Disarmament Commission, the Economic and Social Council and the Special Conference on the theme of ‘Between the Lines.’ Seven of our students were selected to serve as Student Chairs, with at least one being in each committee.

All students throughout the conference grew and flourished as delegates, developing confidence in their public speaking and debating skills and forming new and long lasting friendships. Several delegates should be recognised for their achievements in attaining a committee award:
Liya Xu, Sophia McKenzie, Tomas Camo and Josephine Lee.

All delegates and student chairs from AISHK carried themselves throughout the conference professionally and should be proud of their achievements. On behalf of all AISHK Delegates, I would like to give a special thank you to the Secretaries General - Wendy Liang and Edmund Sze, as well as the Deputy Secretaries General of the conference - Kylie Lau and Lizzy Kwok. In addition to this, I would like to thank my fellow member of the student board, Ella Bindley, and the directors of AISMUN, Mr Flak, Mr Pomeroy and Mrs Jones.  Without these people, the conference wouldn’t have been the rewarding and enjoyable experience it was.
