[Head of Primary Message] Term 3 Week 3 Update 2020/08/17 Updated
It has been very busy in the Primary Division, since my previous update. All our efforts remain dedicated to aiming to provide not only the best learning program we can for students, but also to run the programs and activities which would usually take place if we were on campus.
- Peer Support
This week saw the second Peer Support Session for Term 3, with students focusing on "What Makes Me Happy". Students have continued to engage with each other via Zoom, sharing experiences, stories and laughter with their peers. For more on Peer Support, see this week's recap.
- Colouring Club for Year 1 and 2
Mrs Negus has taken the Colouring Club online for students in Year 1 and 2. This is an opportunity for students to complete some colouring-in while listening to quiet music and interacting with students across the two year levels.
- Student Leadership Meetings
Our Primary Student Leaders, including the SRC, Environmental Committee, House Captains, and our Head and Deputy Boys and Girls, continue to convene online to discuss and for ideas with input from their peers. A range of activities and initiatives are still being planned, including the introduction of Funky Friday.
- Year-Level Assemblies
Year Level Assemblies continue to be held, and albeit online, we have endeavoured to provide our students, staff and parents with this important aspect of school life which brings the AISHK community together, in what can sometimes be an isolating time for many.
- Book Week
Being online has not stopped the festivities and learning which takes place during Book Week! For all that is in store including writing competitions and the beloved costume parade, see our Book Week Update.
- Performing Arts Recitals
We are pleased to announce that students who would usually have the opportunity to participate in the Music Recitals can still do so this year. For more information, please see this week's message from Performing Arts.
Announcement of the New Deputy Heads
On behalf of the School Executive, I am very pleased to announce the appointment of two Deputy Heads of Primary, Mrs Donna Botfield and Mr Christopher Bird, who will commence their roles in January, 2021. Each of the Deputy Head of Primary roles will be responsible for either Reception to Year 2 or Years 3 to 6. This will be further detailed in due course. Donna and Christopher are two internal appointments who were selected from an outstanding field of both local and international candidates.
The two Deputy Head of Primary positions are newly created roles and mark a change of structure in the Primary Leadership team, which currently comprises of Head of Early Childhood, Mrs Cathryn Moore and Dean of Studies, Primary Mr Cameron Reed. Both Cathryn and Cameron, after significant dedication and contribution through their respective roles, will be departing AISHK at the end of 2020 for family reasons. We will be providing a further farewell for Cathryn and Cameron later in the year.
Student Led Conferences
This year, Student Led Conferences will take place for students in Prep to Year 6, from 31 August until 4 September and will be held online, via Zoom. The Student Led Conference:
- Is an opportunity for your child to communicate their learning with you and the teacher, celebrating achievements and identifying areas of growth.
- Will take approximately 40 minutes total in duration, which includes a discussion between the child, teacher and parents.
- This will be followed by a discussion led by your child in a Zoom breakout room, where students will present to you their learning as appropriate for their age.
- Requires your child to take part, therefore, please consider this when scheduling and booking your session.
For full details and instructions regarding Student Led Conferences, Primary parents are reminded to refer to the email sent earlier today.
Student Resource Packs
Primary Parents are kindly reminded of the email sent today regarding Student Resource Packs. The new resource packs, which have a greater focus on items fostering creativity and encouraging alternative options to screen-time, will be ready for collection from Friday 21 August, from the AISHK 2nd Floor Auditorium. Please note the collection hours are from 8:30am - 3:00pm. If your child usually uses the school bus, you may wish to contact Kwoon Chung Motors email@example.com to have them drop off your child’s resource pack on Friday afternoon. Please confirm with Kwoon Chung by Wednesday 19 August.
Teachers’ professional learning has continued with a focus on enhancing teachers' skills in teaching online. This has been a very insightful learning experience for teachers and there is no doubt that the ICT skills of all staff have improved considerably this year.
This term, we have professional learning has placed emphasis on multimodal literature in the English curriculum. As educators, we are all teachers of language. Therefore, this professional learning offered by AISNSW has been instrumental in broadening skills which are applicable and of benefit for our students in any subject area. We are very fortunate to have Sue Pike from AISNSW Zooming in with the Primary division over multiple sessions each week, to work with teachers in this area.
This term, a number of events may not take place, if school continues to be held online. We will be in contact with parents regarding the postponement or cancellation of activities. The School remains flexible and hopeful this year, and we look forward to being able to hold events when it is safe and permissible to do so.
